How To Keep Your Dentures Clean

May 13, 2022

You have your smile back! Congratulations. But once you have your dentures, it's important to remember to care for them and to continue to care for your oral health. Proper care and cleaning will extend the life of your denture, keep it free from stains, and give you the long-lasting smile you deserve. That's why we've created this quick guide to denture care do's and don'ts.

Do's

After eating, remove your dentures and clean them

After you've finished eating, remove your dentures and clean them with a brush. If you're not in a space where that's easily done, you can remove food particles and debris by thoroughly rinsing your dentures under running water.

Keep your mouth clean

Whenever you remove your dentures, ensure you're placing them back into a clean mouth to avoid trapping bacteria. Use a soft toothbrush to clean any natural teeth, your tongue, inside your cheeks, and the top of your mouth.

Brush gently, brush daily

Clean your dentures at least once a day. Use a non-abrasive cleaner specifically formulated for dentures. Remember, your dentures are not natural teeth so be gentle when you brush to avoid damage.

Rinse and repeat

Always rinse your dentures thoroughly after cleaning and food, and before placing them back in your mouth. Between wears, remove any denture glue from your mouth and your dentures. When you use any denture product such as paste or solution, rinse your dentures thoroughly and remove all residue.

Soak your dentures overnight

The best way to clean and care for your dentures overnight is by leaving them to soak in a denture solution within a safe container. This will keep your denture moist and ensure it keeps its shape and durability. If you don't have a denture solution, water is a great backup.

Remember to attend your regular dental check-ups

Dental check-ups aren't just for natural teeth. Oral hygiene is still important, as is ensuring that your denture maintains a good fit. Your dentist will recommend how often to visit and when it’s time to have your denture professionally cleaned.

Don'ts

Never use hot water

Never use hot or boiling water to brush or soak your denture. Heat may warp your denture and permanently damage its shape and durability. So, stick to cool water.

Never use abrasive toothpastes and toothbrushes

Abrasive toothpaste and a hard-bristled toothbrush can quickly damage your denture and shorten its life. Always use a cleaning paste that is designed for dentures and a gentle, soft-bristled toothbrush.

Never use whitening pastes or bleach

The active ingredient in whitening pastes (typically peroxide) will have no impact on the materials of your denture and, therefore, will not affect its colour. Bleach can weaken your denture and shorten its life. If your denture contains metal components, some whitening and bleach products can cause corrosion. Best to stay clear.
