How To Deal With Denture Emergencies

January 4, 2021

Do you know how to deal with denture emergencies? Whilst in most cases dentures offer a safe, functional and aesthetically pleasing alternative to natural teeth, they can still create a number of emergency dental situations. Here we look at some of the most common denture emergencies that can crop up, providing recommendations that will ease the situation until you can seek professional assistance.

Cracked or broken dentures

In most cases, cracked or broken dentures should not be worn until they have been repaired. Dentures usually crack or break because they are dropped, or something heavy is inadvertently placed on them. In these circumstances, simply refrain from using the dentures in the short-term.

Do not try to repair the denture yourself as this could prevent a dental technician being able to repair it. Contact the Denture Clinic as soon as possible for same day repairs.

Denture is rubbing

Even a well-fitting denture may cause a sore spot, as the mouth shape may change over time. If you feel a sore patch developing, it's important to make a dental appointment as the dentures may need to be altered to fit. In the short-term:

- Take painkillers if required

- Stick to soft foods that don't over-stress your gums

- Step up denture hygiene - bacteria are a leading cause of gum inflammation and discomfort

- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 tsp/8 fl oz (250ml)) several times a day, as this can help to kill bacteria and reduce inflammation.

Lost dentures

Sets of dentures are lost surprisingly often! If you've lost your dentures, an emergency trip to the dentist is normally necessary, in order to be equipped with some temporary dentures until a new, customised set can be made. Temporary dentures don't fit quite as well as a permanent set, but will certainly provide some basic function until your new ones are ready.

Gum abscess

In some cases, a gum abscess may form under the denture. This is characterised by a red, swollen area on the gum which is extremely painful. If you suspect you have a gum abscess, it's important to seek emergency treatment as soon as possible. In some people, if left untreated, a gum abscess can spread infection throughout the body, potentially leading to septicemia.

In the short-term, over-the-counter painkillers and rinsing with warm salt water can cause a temporary reduction in pain. If the pain becomes severe, the area swells to the point that swallowing is becoming difficult, or you develop a fever, seek immediate medical attention.

If you are suffering from a gum abscess, it's best not to wear your denture, as it can irritate the infected area even more.
